Zen and the Art of Sand Castles

Why am I talking about sand castles in December? Because I live in Florida and this is what we do. We put on sunscreen and hit the beach, shovels and/or cameras in hand. Go ahead and brag about your snowmen, but we have Buddha's made of sand.

Over the weekend I took my children to a sandcastle festival and fundraiser, complete with sand sculpting contest. The proceeds benefit wellness programs for abused and neglected children, and it's an all-around good time.

Though we did not enter the sand castle contest (you have to get up way to early for that), we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. My son played tug-of-war and later joined in the drum circle. We lingered along the beach, stopping to admire the hard work and creativity of each artist. There were sand-sculpted sea turtles, crabs, an octopus, a "Lobsta", and a dinosaur just to name a few. The winner was the Happy Buddha pictured above.

I love that picture not so much for me and the Buddha (although we do make a smashing pair) but for what's going on in the background. As I'm trying to have this happy, peaceful, Zen-moment-photo-opp with the Buddha, my friend's son is about to pile-drive my son into the sand, while my daughter is walking away disgusted with the both of them. Yet the Buddha and I are still smiling.

Perhaps that's what a Zen moment is -- peace amidst the chaos. Happiness in spite of what's going on around you. Appreciating each moment. The beautiful day, the sky, the ocean, the sand, the family and friends. It was lovely. Not completely fuss or whine-free, but lovely nonetheless. It is a day I will never forget.

Namaste.
